Siamo tutti i vincitori!!!

Σε ένα προηγούμενο post είχα εκθειάσει την φοβερή μαεστρία με την οποία η κυβέρνηση της Φραππεδοχώρας μας, μας είχε ταξιδέψει σε μέρη μαγικά και παραισθησιογόνα, αλλά είχα αμελήσει την συνεισφορά της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης. Αυτοί κι αν βρίσκονται στη χώρα των θαυμάτων. Και γίνομαι πιο σαφής: Άμα παίζουμε πάσκετ (κανένα ορθογραφικό λάθος για όσους ξέρουν...), με 5 λεπτά για το τέλος (οι νομαρχίες που πάνε στο β’ γύρο) και χάνει η Α ομάδα 84-57 από την ομάδα Β με τη βοήθεια μάλιστα της διαιτησίας (λέγε με αριστερές συνεργασίες...), τι θα λέγαμε όλοι; Μα φυσικά οτι η ομάδα Β κερδίζει. Τώρα γιατί στο ΠΑ.ΣΟ.Κ. θριαμβολογούνε, μπορεί κάποιος πολιτικός αναλυτής να μας το εξηγήσει;

Τώρα το απόγευμα θα αρχίσει κι η καφρίλα του exit poll. Άλλο ξενέρωμα κι αυτό...Μα που ξανακούστηκε να ξέρεις το αποτέλεσμα στις εφτά το απόγευμα; Είναι ντροπή. Είναι ένα είδος εκλογικού fast food! Θυμάμαι μικρός, εποχές που έπρεπε να μείνεις όρθιος μέχρι τις τέσσερις τα ξημερώματα για να έχεις μια κάποια σιγουριά στα αποτελέσματα, και με τους παρουσιαστές να μην την παλεύουν καθόλου (νάϊντις παιδί μου...). Πάντως ευτυχώς που έβαλαν κι οι δεξιοί και το πρόκριμα του 42%, γιατί αλλιώς δεν θα την παλεύαμε με τόση αφίσα και βρωμιά. Αλήθεια, τόσα λεφτά για τις προεκλογικές εκστρατείες που τα βρίσκουν;

  5. Ρίτσος; Ποιος είναι ο κύριος αυτός;

'One day you will be succesful'

Well thanks a lot stupid fortune cookie!!! It would be more useful if you told me which day. That way I could just sit on my back and wait...At least for once, my lucky number was not 13, despite the fact that it is in fact my favorite number.
No worries though. In the future (implement american voice here!) there will AFC's, Advanced Fortune Cookies (updated with the latest patch). They will be much more personalised and specific. An example from the beta tests: 'Hi Jason! You are looking fine. Enjoyed those shrimp noodles? In 3 days you will find a note bill on the street. The way of Confucius is with you.' Note for developers: ambiguity and clarity will gradually be abolished, but sincereity still remains at the same old levels; zero that is.

P.S. What do I have to do to get chop-sticks with my noodles? Seriously you guys....

I 've been (and still am) searching for a switch....

Υ.Γ. 1 Αυτοί οι μαλάκες οι υποψήφιοι έχουν περπατήσει ποτέ μόνοι τους στις πόλεις τους;

Pick up those daisies!

Sometimes things can be so funny, I mean really funny like Daisies, the movie I watched at (again almost empty) Attikon. I know I was bit moody yesterday, but I am really glad to have seen this one, a true gem. In this 1966 Checkslovak New-Wave art nouveau movie, two bohemian sisters live their funny little life through a series of social experiments, teasing boys into falling in love with them and writing their telephone numbers in their walls, pondering abut the great meanings of life, getting hilariously drunk in restaurants, convincing middle aged men to pay for their lunches, dressing up, destroying a banquet and generally just doing whatever they want and having fun. The movie is hilarious, anti-conformist and even anarchist at times, visually beautiful with the alternating photography, offering not only a magnificent impromptu funky comedy but also an admiration for everything peculiar and unstrained in life. If Charlie Chaplin and Pier Paolo Pasolini were alive, they would be really proud for this one.

You see, one o fthe reasons that I really liked in the movie, is because it seriously attempts to bring new elements into cinematography not compromising to any typical forms or procedures, but rather relying heavily on impressionist and expressionist elemts, that eventually create a fantastic and harmonious collage of stills, colour, dialogues, and interaction, proving the amazing space there is out there to explore while making a movie.

By the way, recap notes are yet to be made, so it will take plenty of time to make a relevant post, not to mention Film are palying at An Club on Thursday.

Other exciting things are police officers using iron fists in demonstrations. Public order never seizes to amaze me. Other not so exciting news is my Depeche Mode Live in Athens double CD that finally arrived (and paid a hefty 30 euros for it); the live was great, these old geasers being strong and professional as ever, but the live CD 's are just ludicrous. I have heard plenty of bootlegs that are much better in terms of sound quality. Still, that does not mean I am not listening to it...

Withdrawal syndromes...

Although I have promised myself a recap, I still have not put down any notes about it; instead I had withdrawal syndrome and went to Apollon-Attikon to watch two of the offered repeats. There were 2 main things I realized: contrary to last year, this year I really suck at picking movies. Secondly, I now know for sure that I must be having some kind of issues, no matter how small, because the average attendance tonight was 20 persons and trust when I say that I saw no familiar faces.

There 4 movies in total, Unfaithfully Yours, Hana, Performance and 9 Souls. Instead of watching Unfaithfully Yours and 9 Souls, I watched Hana and Performance; I shouldn’t have.

Hana is set in Japan, just about the time when the samurai code becomes essentially obsolete, and the last of them have really taken a serious decline. Our hero ahs left the clan and resides in a lower class slum, trying to find his father’s killer, and avenge his death, although as the movie progresses he sees that the life of the samurai is not for him, falls in love with a neighbor in the slums, forgives his father’s killer, and becomes friends with various ‘degenerates’. If you like Japanese movie, there are two main reasons why you should not watch this one. First it debunks the cinematic samurai legacy as well the theme of dignity, reveange, self-respect honour and determination, providing miserable characters and a shallow story. The second reason, is because it is essentially not good. In fact it is lukewarm, with unnoticed directing and bad performances. It reminded me more of a TV soap rather than a movie. However, I am giving it the benefit of the doubt as the theatre was almost empty, and that makes it always weird to watch a movie. Nonetheless, I was wishing I was at the Attikon watching Daisies.

Of course, I did go to Attikon, but afterwards, to see Performance, an over the top artistic film about an east Londoner pushover, that seeks hideout in the home of an eccentric rock star (Mick Jagger) who is trapped in his creative block for the past years. Generally, it is not half as bad as you would expect, it does not become boring, and it is fairly interesting as far as the juxtaposition of the characters, and the notion of the ultimate performance and the spirit of creative inspiration. Don’t expect anything much here, or anything of serious structure. To be honest, the movie does not have much value, but it was OK for me to watch in again an almost empty theatre with a couple of beers.

Anyways that’s it for tonight.

Day 11: It is sad, is it not?

I know that many of the posts have been dog shit, hasty and unimaginative, but I am pretty sure tonight’s will be one of the drabbest. It is only natural I guess, since tonight was the last night of the 12 International Athens Film Festival, Premiere Nights. I also have a lot in my mind right now, indifferent to the festival itself, plus I am worried about the extent of my recap (will be posted in the next few days) already, and so I do not have much of an appetite for writing much tonight. Anyways, I guess I have to start from somewhere, and that will be from approximately two thirty at Apollon, where I watched Delta, the greek documentary I was talking about in one of my earlier posts. My original intention was to write this par of the post in Greek, and although my notes were also in Greek, I can’t be arsed to force my brain to think back into my mother tongue so late at night.

Delta is about the dramatic disasters the oil business has brought in the region of the delta of Niger river in Nigeria. There are 2 things that impress you straight ahead. The first is obviously the amazing scene where the journalist team meets up with a team of MEND militia on their boats in the river, and the second is the interesting digitized sharp high contrast photography which contributes to the film’s journalistic and professional character as well as fitting to its distant theme. In relation to past Exandas productions, in this one it is made clear that Avgeropoulos and his colleagues are in search of a meaningful and appropriate directing approach and the careful montage which we are not only fitting to the theme and the tone, but also determine the pace of the narrative. Delta has a clear, simple and intelligent structure, which although creates questions that are progressively covered and answered, leading to a complete presentation of the issue. Avgeropoulos remains always professional and objective, without however not hiding his surprise for what he observes, focusing his camera at those elements, like the broken pump that has been spilling crude oil for the past 3 years and nobody if fixing it, it’s terrible sound reminding of dirty breath, but always completely inexplicable.

At the beginning the impression is given that MEND is the first ecological fighting group in the world, but in fact their guerilla and intimidating history through their terrorizing of the elections and their subsequent involvement in oil stealing kidnapping and opposing the politicians is revealed, which however is slowly heading at becoming the military voice and representatives of the people of the delta through the adaptation of sound ideological grounds. These are found thanks to the history of the region and the world shocking story of the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa by the state in 1995, a peace activist protesting against the demise of the Delta and the vast influence of the oil companies. The story itself was a PR disaster for Shell, who had to limit their expanding plans due to the unsettling environment. Freedom fighters or terrorists, that is a question that the documentary is not answering but is instead providing all the necessary information to make up your own mind without judging siding with MEND.

The documentary is not justifying the creation of MEND, but instead looks deeper at finding the true roots of their appearance, which inevitably leads to the dire ecological and socio-economical disaster, the farce of a democracy Nigeria is applying, the high level of corruption, the derelict symptoms of a post-colonial country and of the entrapment of the vast majority of the country’s GDP in the hands of the multi-nationals. Like the man behind it, Delta is deeply communicational, revealing, to the point but also modest at the same time, guiding the audience according to essential facts, which are presented both in narrative and visually, into creating its own opinion and perception of the situation, but also into really questioning the economical backbone of the western world, first resources, which in their vast majority lie outside the westerns borders.

The editing and the directing was so good, that in fact it kept me thinking of Conrad’s highly influential novel, The Heart of Darkness; the militia seemed very organized and outlandish, that it is only an eccentric spiritual leader that they are missing.

The short Q&A session that followed afterwards, was amazingly enough very creative and thought provoking, but also very direct and friendly thanks to Avgeropoulos good nature (he didn’t even want to use a microphone!), making a prime example of how creators and journalists should not be considered as stereotypes of social power and influence, but the means of communication and cultural exchange that can strengthen and enhance our communities.

With plenty of time at hand, I left Apollon, and went to Panormou, where I lunched again at the Epi tis Panormou taverna (fairly expensive but worth its money comparing to other restaurants, tavernas and fast food), and when into Danaos, for my last film there for the festival, La Battaglia di Algeri. As you can imagine, it goes without saying that I indulged myself at one of those terrific apple pies once again.

The movie itself is a still modern and didactic account of the events that led to the independence of Algeria in the 60’s, an emphatic historical epic, mainly focusing on the armed urban conflict between the Algerian resistance and the special paratroop division of the French forces.

The film is a massive production that makes use of historical footage a few times, essentially paying tribute to the determination of the Algerian people, while at the same time providing an insight in the dirty detail of one of the last European colonial conflicts. It does not get stuck in the cultural and religious differences, although ample time is given to them too, but instead points out to the utter simplicity and magnitude of the desire of freedom and dignity. Without being controversial, it achieves at being fairly objective and not heavily sided with the Algerians, narrating the story from both sides, while being one of the few movies to actually give a true face to both the ‘terrorists’ and the victims. The director goes further and further inside the vicious circle of violence, with blunt, violent and sometimes raw scenes of explosions and public shooting, constantly reminding us that in a conflict, there is no black white, just the harsh and dirty reality of warfare. La Battaglia de Algerie is not only bold and daring with its shots but also daring at the approach itself; don’t forget this moie was shot right after Algeria got it’s independence. The performances could be said to be rather rigid or stereotypical if you want, but is what you come to expect from a movie like this. Although it is was made in 1966, the directing and the photography remain powerful, but they still have this peculiar allure if you want, those odd moment and techniques that are not used any more (extreme zoom in or a much more free to move camera amongst the crowds and others) that make it a bit peculiar to watch, but also unique.

As mentioned, despite its age, the movie is very current and interesting for the modern crowd due to the obvious analogies that can be drawn between the Algerian independence and the conflict between the western and the muslim world today. It is becoming clear in this movie, that interpretation of events and cause simply rely on which side you find yourself on, and not so much the opposite. The terms ‘terrorists’, ‘freedom fighters’ or ‘revolutionaries’ depend only on the outcome: it they win they are heroes, and the if they loose they are criminals. There is no middle ground.

Anyways, Gillo Pontecorvo’s film is thought to be some sorts of a masterpiece, and I guess back in 1966 it must have been, but seeing it today, you can’t but admire it’s technique and boiling intensity, but at the same time it does not imprint you enough as you would have wished perhaps. Those were my last thought about it as I was leaving Danaos, taking the metro back to Apollon to watch my last film (not screening) for the festival, This Film is Not Yet Rated, an independent American exposé of the importance and the workings of the MPAA ratings system (PG, PG13, NC17, etc…).

The principal idea behind it is that it is a completely uncontrolled mechanism, which does it’s work in secret, basically influenced by one person (the MPAA chairman), bending it’s own rules, ruling in favour of the big studios, leading filmmaking to the wrong directions and failing the principal cause for which it was created, protecting children and teenagers from unwanted film material. The documentary debate focuses mainly on directors’ and producers’ experiences on the matter, does try to expand the discussion on whether such a system is needed or not (but not very much, trying not be controversial), while it offers almost no proper response from the other side, that is the MPAA and of course a good majority of reserved and puritan Americans who think the system is good. Some major points are made, like the fact that anything truly sexual or related to sexual pleasure is essentially branded as NC-17, while other movies are being terribly violent but still get PG-13 or R, the way that homosexuality scenes are always branded in more conservative way than heterosexual scenes, the fact that the MPAA and the ratings system is a creation of the big studios, and inevitably serves their interest, the ratings board unjustifiable secrecy and unquestionable authority and so. Essentially it drags on and on about a subject that has no importance for European crowds at all, just showing once again those peculiar aspects of American cooperate culture, where Puritanism and uneasiness with sexuality work hand by hand with the promotion of violence and personal success at any cost, resulting in amazing inte-social contradictions and paradoxes, especially regarding adulthood and personal responsibility (as far as I know, in some states at least, you can operate heavy machinery, drive a fast car, marry, make your own business, have children, shoot a gun with armor piercing bullets, get drafted and go to Iraq, vote, all before you reach an age you are allowed to have a beer!). Nonetheless, I would be really interested in listening to other side of the story more carefully, something which Kirby Dick completely fails to do (TV segments of Jack Valenti simply wont do it), resulting in what is essentially a self-gloating one-sided presentation of the issue.

Of course the movie is fun to watch, thanks to some of the outrageous stories described but mainly to the ‘action backdrop’ if you want, where Dick hires a PI to track down the names of the members of the rating board, submits the documentary itself for rating, instantly receives an NC-17, and then causes a number of moderate reactions and hilarious phone conversations (the one with the MPAA lawyer and chairman of the appeal board is simply astounding with the way the guy can be so childishly authoritative and rigid). By the way the final edit obviously got an NC-17, without a single vote for downgrading it to an R. My reaction towards the film: way too American, always stating the way too bobvious, shallow, uninteresting, I would not have missed it had it not been screened, but is saved by the smart gimmick that the movie interacts with the real world (the detective and its own rating story) and the story is shown in the same movie. My feeling towards the whole issue: it is silly, and anyone working with the big studios should just accept it really and not whine about it. Obviously any rating system of that sorts is bound to be a form of censorship (especially the PG-14 and NC-17 ratings), and it all boils down to the fact that parents cannot guide their children appropriately and protect from bad movies or encourage them towards the right one. The system is an obvious control handle for the big studios and the American film industry (you don’t have anything similar for books let’s say, correct?) and thus it is all related to what you want to sell and how.

Honestly, I am disappointed that this was last movie for the festival, I would have preferred a fiction film, you know, possibly something touchy or like that to go with the melancholic mood I was in. Thankfully that came in the form of my repeat viewing of Wild Tigers I Have Known, which I enjoyed watching with a couple of beers, and found and realized a couple of things more (a strong suspicion that Rodeo is becoming himself homosexual as well, thanks to his narcissm, although that still remains an ambiguity nicely in accordance with the mood of the movie), reaffirmed some notions I had (the intelligent use of photography as a narrative, the use of leaves as a sign of comfortable places for Logan and the usage of the spider, and the general possibly unintentional references to Carrie) as well as a misinterpretation I had of a scene from the first time I watched it (I thought that some scenes were chronically misplaced, mainly because I linked the very last scene with the caves scene, not noticing the clothes Logan was wearing). After the end, I found myself again in a Q&A session with the director Cam Archer, mainly because the festival was definitely over and because he is a fun guy, while surprisingly enough the questions were not all that stupid. After that I went at the closing party (not much of a party really) at the bacaro bar in Sofokleous, realized how good a spot it is (situated and occupying almost a whole arcade, had myself a Glenfidich and just walked from here to there thinking some stuff over, or not thinking at all actually.

Well it is over, and it is sad, mainly because I have to go back to the real world, which sucks, but it is the right thing to do. There are some repeats happening at the Apollon and the Attikon until their regular Thursday premieres arrive, but obviously it is not the same thing (not that I wont go…). I wont write much more now, because I will try and write something better about the festival as a festival and the feeling and my feelings toward it and cinema in general. Trust me, that will take some time….

Didn’t like:

- The way Americans can be so shallow and dragging like in This Film is Not Yet Rated.

- The festival being over.

Liked:

-
The mini photo exhibition from the photography students in bacaro.

- The plentiful references to other movies in This Film is Not Yet Rated.

- How some movies can remain so on-topic and current like La Battaglia De Algerie.

- The many things you can discover in cinema in the second, third, fourth….viewing.

- The chance Wild Tigers I Have Known to look around the cinema, and see the rows of faces stuck to the screen; always a beautiful sight.

- The fact that I did not see any of the five award winning movies!!! Damn you pamphlet!

- Greek journalistic documentaries being of the highest standard.

- The informal discussion after Delta.

Blackberry award for the night:

This Film is Not Yet Rated but it is awarded…get a life.

Day 10: A pink leather, a short job and a classic

Never say never again; last night I declared myself perplexed, but there are always movies that can drive you further down the spiral, may that spiral be of puzzlement and confusion or delusion. You will understand more as this post progresses.

The day started with just a few hours of bad quality sleep, and then me showing up at the Danaos box-office with a box of cakes literally bribing my way on good seats; I am not kidding here, it worked (!) and we also had a good laugh. I then continued with me walking a lot, appreciating the Panormou neighborhood even more, eating again at Epi tis Panormou, having tea at Starbucks, and eventually finding my way back to Danaos, sharing opinions and comments on the festival and movies in general with the great guys at the foyer. Obviously, I had one of those orgasmic apple-pies again, and finally got on one of my privileged seats for the second installment of the short movies mini-special. Pleased with the first installment, I again treated them lightly and as a warm up for the next features. The 1st one was Love, This Time, a rather sad and depressive short, but featuring the ‘mature girl transforming into a woman – maternal figure’ theme, exhibiting very good performances and interesting approaches at inter-children relationships. Next came In the Eye Abides the Heart, a good video clip for a Shirley Manson song, as far as I could follow it, since I was asleep for most of it. Linerboard was bizarre, awkward and embarrassing at times, with strange use of photography, original dialogues and embarrassing moments, typical Scandinavian. Banquise, the story of a fat girl trying to loose weight by wearing warm clothes in summer, and who loves winter, is slightly sad, but bed-time story stuff, makes you go ‘ohhh….’. After that came (sure?) Our Man in Nirvana, a groovy and slightly psychedelic journey, which has a simple story to say, using two different animation techniques, reminding us of the saying, ‘build a home, have a baby, plant a tree’. Tragic Tale With a Happy Ending, was exactly what its name suggested, a very good short, styled after underground comics, with a beautiful and gothic story. So did, Phantom Canyon, the most interesting of them all probably, but also the most difficult to follow (don’t forget, I used these as a warm up). Sniffer, had a simple symbolic idea (human bodies drawn in the opposite direction of gravity), but nonetheless was rather uninteresting and very static. Finally, the last one was Kwiz, an amazing and hilarious anecdote which actually got the warmest applause in the festival so far (Pistols, Sex Pistols!). Brilliant.

Being in good spirits, I did my best to get my teeth as brown as possible (=coffee and cigarettes), and then entered Danaos 2 cinema theatre, probably for the last time during the festival. In case I have not mentioned, Danaos 2 is an amazing place to watch movies. It is very small (maximum 60 people I think) and steep, thus allowing anyone to sit as he-she likes without bothering the one in behind, something like a home cinema experience. The movie in question was Free Floating from Russia, which as explained by one of the festival people and the director himself, had a slight technical issue (some of the shots height was cut out, missing a few heads and feet here and there).

Free Floating is a very slow, picturesque and extraordinary piece of work, making Kaurismaki’s pace look like a Ferrari running on nitro. Nonetheless, this does not prove to be a problem, and it manages to be poignant, solid and independently thinking like Leonyl, the protagonist of the story. Wide, deep and distant shots creating beautiful elongated stills, is one the characteristics of the movie, which follows Leonyl through his work-shifting as he goes through a number of odd and dodgy job placements, where he finds himself in all kinds of paradoxical and surreal situations and amongst graphical characters. Typical examples are the hunchback and his slimmy fatty co-worker (both lazier than a turtle), and their unprofessional and bullshit talking foreman, who is completely ignorant as far as foundations are concerned, Leonyl’s old co-workers, who believe that they can wake up the next morning and have a ready-job doing nothing and getting drunk in the nights (derelicts of the USSR era possibly), or finally the sly flea-market shoe salesman who minimalisticly seduces his clients and convinces them to buy his shoddy pairs.

The scenery, the shots and the whole environment set us is a mixture of calm decay and abandonment, a time capsule of sorts or a constant pause in time, weird and almost never worrying, something like an Alice in Wonderland, but in tangible terms. Despite this however, the movie is never pessimistic or depressive; the same goes for the character of Leonyl, who is always sincere and honest in his wording (not that he says a lot) and actions, hard working, never losing focus, patient, quietly determined, but also an introvert and keeping to himself, not getting over his head or excited easily, but always trying to fit in various comical ways, reminding a lot from Charlo mute comedy. He is also a fast learner and unseemingly optimistic, a character that is more than meets the eye. This great persona acts as part of a larger ensemble that is formed by simple but yet very effective directing, thoughtful photography and a very entertaining script. The slow pace fits in brilliantly, giving you ample time to appreciate and think over the shots and scenes without ever becoming boring, almost challenging you to pick up on the subtle humor that is greatly scattered throughout the film. It avoids making any political or social statements, but instead approaches the character and individual side of the unemployment and economical drawbacks in the former USSR, mainly through the odd support characters who almost none of them have a real job, and the protagonist, who while might be too much of a bizarre fairy tale character, you like him from the beginning to the end, and enjoy him in plenty of moments, like when he botches a proper screw over his foreman was trying to make, or his wordplay with the girl he likes, or his obvious embarrassment when his mother buys him a heavy metal top. Exodus from this loop of peculiar and non rewarding jobs and unemployment comes in the form of an outlandish and peculiar barge, made up by trackters spare parts, with a minimal crew scavenging metal parts, a journey boat that gives Leonyl the opportunity to be himself, assured and more sociable.

Although the movie could be said to be too naïve and light, it is these qualities that make it enjoyable and entertaining, an extraordinary result that makes you smile almost constantly. A very nice film, not intimidating as first impressions might conjure, and very pleasant.

Feeling that I made a wise choice for choosing Free Floating and not seeing German Requiem, and after sipping down 2 double espressos (I am feeling terrible now), I went back to Danaos 1, to watch the ever classic and tremendous Seconds by Frankenheimer, with one of the most unrecognized and misunderstood of Hollywood’s old stars, Rock Hudson. With principal ideas from The Portrait of Dorian Gray and Faustus, based on the David Ely’s novel ‘The Seconds’ is the story of a depressive banker (Arthur Hamilton) having lost interest in his life, and unpleased by his material success, who receives an invitation to transform himself and start over again, a second chance in life (a life more free, with no mistakes of the past, more primitive, based on instinct and essentially a release for the subconscious desires) manifested as Tony Wilson thanks to the Company, which takes care of everything, even your fake death. Such a transformation is achieved mentally and artistically in the much more recent Lynchian world, but here, it is done through plastic surgery and relocation, and identity assignment, making it much more straightforward by also more raw in a sense. Seconds is a directing masterpiece, with appealing angles and amazing camera positioning, use of the camera fixed to reference to the body while the body moves, the shots architecturally laid out with at least props as possible, composing a fantastic mystery thriller, with a mesmerizing and always shifting plot. I have to insist on the simple but yet amazingly classic and enthralling directing, always bringing in mind the fantastic way in which the camera always places in the same relative position the eyes of the protagonist (Wilson or Hamilton) and in general the fascination with the eyes. Furthermore I should point out to an amazing scene where Wilson visits his wife in his previous life, who as she talks about Hamilton, looks at the visible to us mirror holding a picture of her ‘late’ husband while Wilson looks out of the shot diagonally, but his eyes still visible, thus producing 2 doubles (Mrs. Hamilton and her reflection, the picture of Hamilton and Wilson) all looking straight at the audience, creating a perfect allegory about the double standard of ourselves, what we show and what we hide, and how the eyes can always betray us. Another memorable scene near the end, is the sequence of impressive close-ups between Wilson and his friend in the waiting room of the Company.

Seconds, even 40 years after its production, remains innovative, daring, and with an incredible plot, which even when you think it has climaxed, it in fact goes even further with the final few scenes becoming the epitome of the futile attempts of the incomplete and overambitious egotistical clients of the Company at getting what they desire. What it is even more exciting, is the fact that every time a part of the plot is revealed, you manage to feel both satisfied at the progression but also still worried about what’s coming next. Hudson’s performance is unique and longstanding, definitely drawing a lot from his personal life, and the way he attempted to keep his secrets under the hood of his appearances, his gazes and looks in the movie redefining the terms ‘sad’, ‘empty’ and ‘depressed’.

Apart from being great, Seconds, can be used as an excellent reference point with regards to other movies, not only of the same genre, but also of cinema in general. I was having just recently a short discussion about the way modern movies stir away from the classic movie of the 50’s or 60’s, where the simple solid structure of directing, plot and casting was the golden rule, to over-creating, creating a multiplicity of characters and interpretations, subplots, and always filling in the cava with all kinds of visual aids, polychromy, fast or varying pace, and other such techniques an gimmicks. Although I do agree that movies of the first format always manage to keep the audience extremely focused and driven into the movie, while films of the second form create tremendous visual and aesthetic results, I feel that repeating successful and top shelve recipes all of the time, will halt cinema from its development. We should not forget that it is the youngest of the arts, and considering lets say for example painting, cinema might as well still be at its primitive stage, something like etch drawings in caves. That is why I am always looking forward to a new film, just to see if something new, extraordinary or novel has been tried out and how well it works, and how it compares with previous work.

Well, the last screening, consisting of two films, are definitely in the extremes of the exploration process cinema is still carrying out, both being parts of the Queer Cinema special, with aesthetics being a major characteristic of both. I equipped with the total of 3 Coronas and I found a pretty good seat, just before Scorpio Rising started. The 34 minute short is an exhibition of the leather and metal aesthetics of the gay niker community of the 60’s, with the concept of authority transpiring into sexuality, and also a subtle backdrop story just for reasons of cohesion. A nice collage, with a good soundtrack (music and roaring motorcycle engines is all the sound available), where the aesthetic result is in fact of high caliber and with great interest, with only possible drawback the way the shots are accelerating in sequence towards the last minutes; thankfully it is smartly timed.

On the other hand, the second and main feature of the screening, Pink Narcissus is the complete opposite, and I am trying to find the best combination of words to describe it in brief. Here is the attempt. Extremely kitch, dragging and boring, pseudo-artistic and posy, hedonistic, part porn, part fantasy, complete decadence and collapse of any possible structure that might have been in the beginning, portrayal of a gay narcissus (who is not that good looking) with an extreme bad taste, wild imagination and obsession with the color pink. In less words: utter shit! Rubbish! I like to think that I am open-minded, but not silly-minded. The film is so bad that even though I went through 3 beers, there were still times that it was extremely boring. It is definitely not shocking (sure you get the odd cock shot or blowjob or full screen straight at you ejaculation shot), and it is perhaps more of an aesthetics film masturbation if not anything else. Amazingly though, screenings like these are always sought after not by myself only, but by other as well, recognizing that trash of this magnitude contribute a lot in making the festival great and legendary, not to mention that there is always something to learn from even movies like these, like ‘how much pink you can tolerate before going color blind?’. One of the worst films I have seen (being there with the great Orgazmo), had I know before though I would have still gone and seen it; the reason, you ask? Simply, Pink Narcissus is so bad that it might never get another screening ever again!!!

With the last day of the festival literally coming up (six in the morning right now, 1 hour before sunrise), but also with the prospect of some repeats taking place in Attikon and Apollon until Thursday when they receive their normal film schedule again, I don’t know exactly how to feel, apart from tired. To be honest I am not looking forward to recapping the festival, because that is going to be a very painful and long effort. Anyways, I promised I would explain why my moods changed from the fifth day onwards. The reason is not only that the festival started screening some of the big guns (and perhaps my better luck at picking movies) but also because I started wearing flip flops again! My feet suffer from mild athlete’s foot, and my old Road shoes are completely messed up in dire need of a new sole, which literally left my feet grilled and smelly. Thankfully now, I have invented a new (OK obviously not so new) way of watching films: barefoot!

Have to go now…

Didn’t like:

- The fact that no one showed up to prologue Scorpio Rising and Pink Narcissus; it would be really great to hear crap like ‘epitomal and historic….first attempt…really influential….’ and then seen these two.

Liked:

- The little film chat I had with the foyer guys at Danaos, as well as the apple pie of course!!!

- Finding Penny in the crowd, sister of a friend of a friend.....

- Again watching a wide variety of films.

Blackberry award for the night:

Technically this is not a worst movie award (Beware you ill-tasted pink gay man!), but instead a greatest disappointment or flop award, and so The Lost look destined to take the crown with them!

Best movie of the night:

Pink Narcissus…only kidding! Technically Seconds was obviously the best, but because it is just a special re-screening and not part of a particular festival section or special, it honorably goes out to Free Floating, for creating the longest lasting smile on my face in a cinema ever.

Blackberry award for the festival so far:

The Lost should order an extra piece of luggage to carry the award with them…

Best movie of the festival so far:

Give me a break!

Schedule pamphlet status at the time of writing:

Like drunk Santa Claus on acid.

P.S. 1: Panagioti, leave Eleonora at her peace, OK??? Why are you bothering her? Really now, what it is your problem man? Are you starting to realize the truth of my words? ;-)

P.S. 2: Make sure to check out www.themoviescult.gr, a much better organized and professional chronology of the festival.

P.S. 3: In my post that included the first instalment of the short movies I completely forgot British Dream and Desires – Family Ties, which was rather funny but with an unappealing animation style.
